The Yateley Crystal Cup: The Myths
The Yateley Crystal Cup is probably the most important treasure owned by St Peter's Church. There are two competing versions of the legends concerning the silversmith who made it:
- Version A maintains that the Crystal Cup was made by Richard White who held land in Yateley, as recorded in the Crondal Customary of 1567. A record in the parish registers of Pirbright of the burial of a Richard White on 1st July 1581 states he was the Queen's cuppmaker.
- Version B maintains that the Crystal Cup was made by William Geale who was buried in Yateley on 4 Sep 1638. The entry in Yateley parish registers states he was the King's cupmaker.
