Letter of complaint

Sept 4th 1818

Sir,

I am very sorry to have occasion to complain of the conduct of eleven of the Cadets of the establishment under your Superintendence. Mostly the Senior ones who met the 27th ult. about half past 4 o Clock on the green facing my Houses for the avowed purpose of hunting and killing Cats. When I learnt the intent of their meeting I took occasion to go to and Remonstrate with them on the Cruelty of the practice which I have since learnt is very Common with them desiring them not to do so on our Green or I should take an Opportunity to report their Conduct on that occasion to you, instantly as with accord and by signal they took off their Caps put them under their arms to a Man and showered down a Serenade of Oaths and Abuses disgraceful to the lowest orders of Society telling Me I might be D˜-d and that if I did not decamp they (meaning all-together) would hide Me as they called it so that I should remember interrupting them for the future. I of course finding I could work no good left them and before I could get out of Sight one of them took a beautiful Black and white Cat and set 5 or six dogs at and killed it...

I afterwards understood they killed a second and then they set to on a Badger. What became of Him I know not, not thinking it worth inquiring ... which I should not have done at all but for the above Occasion that my self (and many of my neighbours complain likewise) have been frequently annoyed generally of afternoons by their plucking my flowers, even they have the audacity to open and come in to my garden for that purpose tho' generally they do so by leaning over the wall so that when at home I generally look out my self & when out I direct someone else to do so. I am fond of my garden and tho the flowers are not worth much yet I dislike to have them taken in that way.

I have only to say that these are grievencies that I am very sorry to trouble you with knowing you must have much to attend to yet if with little trouble you could remove these disgraceful evils you would confer a very essential Obligation on your

Obedient Servant
