Licensed to sell sweets
Whilst looking for alehouse and beerhouse licences in the Register of Licences granted in the NE Hants Petty Sessions held by the Justices of the Peace, at both the Odiham and Aldershot Courts, a surprising discovery was made. Under an Act of Parliament passed in the sixth year of the reign of George IV, two "Off Licences" were granted in Yateley on 25 October 1873, apparently merely to sell sweets. James Rogers was granted one "Off Licence" in 1873 at his own premises which were stated to have an annual value of £19. William Thomas Gadd was granted the other licence at premises with an annual value of £30, then owned by Benjamin William Panter of South Stoke, Berks. James Roger's shop is now incorporated into the eastern end of the White Lion, and William Gadd's shop was next to Chaddisbrooke.
