Owners & Occupiers of Monteagle House

A list of owners and occupiers of Monteagle House and its farmland. Where known separate listings have been made for the occupier of the house and the farmer who leased the farmland.

The main source for the owner after 1915 is the freehold property deeds of the house. In 1915 the property consisting of a farm of about 70 acres was enfranchised from a copyholding of the manor of Crondall to a freehold in 'fee simple'. Before 1915 the owners can be traced through the manorial court books back to William Cave 1617. Before 1617 there are gaps in the records which has made it impossible to track the property back to the Crondall Customary of 1567, which lists the field names on which the present house was built.

The main sources for the occupiers are the Poor Rates from the 1656 to 1800, then the Land Tax Returns from 1800-1832, the Tithe Apportionment then the censuses from 1841-1901. After that the main source for the occupier is the Electoral Registers. These sources can at times be supplemented by wills, when these are not already enrolled in the court books, Church Rates, Directories, church registers of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.
