Ambush & Betrayal by Mistress
While Charles Peace flourished as never before, the residents of south London grew ever more alarmed at the spate of unsolved robberies. The police were baffled and frustrated until one night a torch was spotted in a darkened house. Reinforcements were summoned and lay in wait.
When the thief emerged he was grabbed - there was a desperate struggle in which Peace fired 5 shots, surprising and severely wounding the constable in the elbow and head. But Peace was captured and his burglaring days were ended. At the police station he gave his name as John Ward, aged 60, but shortly afterwards Mrs Thompson revealed to the police that he was Charles Peace. Mrs Ward/Peace had already vanished.
