The facts in the 16th Century

The Rev Branson did not have the benefit of Roger Davey's book (published by Hampshire Record Office) transcribing the Lay Subsidy of 1586 -- almost exactly a quarter of a millennium after the assessment of 1334.

Itchell (in Crondall) has disappeared and Ewshott (in Crondall) has been added. Likewise in Yateley parish Southwood has disappeared and Hawley has been added:

1334 1586 Value Assessment
rank rank Lands Goods Lands Goods Total
2 1 Aldershot 40.00 40.00 2.67 2.00 4.67
1 2 Yateley 7.00 67.00 0.47 3.35 3.82
10 3 Crondall 50.00 5.00 3.33 0.25 3.58
5 4 Long Sutton 6.00 62.00 0.40 3.10 3.50
5 Ewshott 22.00 26.00 1.47 1.30 2.77
6 Hawley 4.00 40.00 0.27 2.00 2.27
4 7 Crookham 2.00 34.00 0.13 1.70 1.83
11 8 Farnborough 1.00 29.00 0.07 1.45 1.52
9 9 Dippenhall 0.00 28.00 0.00 1.40 1.40
7 10 Cove 2.00 24.00 0.13 1.20 1.33
8 11 Swanthorpe 0.00 26.00 0.00 1.30 1.30
TOTAL 134.00 381.00 8.94 19.05 27.99

Comparing the 1334 tax assessment with that for 1586:

1. Aldershot has overtaken Yateley in total tax assessed, but Yateley folk still pay themost tax on their goods (defined as movable property). The 1334 tax was assessed only on movables, that is belongings.

2. Crondall has leapt from second from bottom in 1334 to third from the top in total tax, but is still bottom in the taxation of goods. The reason for the new prominence of Aldershot and Crondall is the high valuation of the lands of Robert White (£40) and Dame Elizabeth Paulet (£50) respectively.

3. Hawley, which was included in Yateley in 1334 has emerged at 3= for goods but, like Yateley, had a low assessment for the value of its lands.
