Yateley History Project

WYNDHAM FAMILY OF YATELEY

Barbara Garrett was the only researcher to look at 18th century Yateley. Although a copyholder of the Manor of Crondall, whose lordship was owned by the Dean & Chapter of Winchester, Thomas Wyndham was the largest landowner. Since he had 'halimote tenants' of his own he ran his own sub-manor named the Manor of Hall Place. Hall Place held its own manorial courts, and tenants were admitted to and surrendered their holdings just has for the Manor of Crondall.

From the time of the Civil War these Hall Place transactions were not recorded in the Crondall courtbooks held in Winchester before 1760. Subsequently, whilst researching Firgrove Manor for the Hampshire Gardens Trust Research Group we have found that records of the Manor of Hall Place before 1800 have been desposted at the Wiltshire & Swindon Record Office by the Arundell family of Wardour Castle.

Thomas Wyndham had inherited his Yateley estates by marrying Elizabeth Helyer. That much was already clear when Barbara started work, but how was Thomas related the the august west country Wyndham Family, and how did Lord Arundell manage to inherit his Yateley estates?
