Yvonne FitzRoy

GRAND-DAUGHTER OF ~~HORATIO FITZROY

Research and text by Dr Richard Johnston

Yvonne FitzRoy, born 17 Oct 1891 in London, was Sir Almeric FitzRoy's only daughter.

On 8 May 1914 she acted in the two performances of a play at the Royal Court Theatre called The Farewell Performance, a drama in three acts which she had written with her cousin Douglas Anstruther. This was an aristocratically organised charity performance to raise funds for The FitzRoy Club for Working Lads, a FitzRoy family venture to help the poor of London.

Very soon she was involved in much the more serious business of the First World War, where she revealed her adventurous FitzRoy character as a nurse. Her services in conditions of great danger with the Scottish Women's Hospital service in Romania and Russia in 1916 to 1917 earned her the Russian Order of St. George and St. Stanislaus, and British and Allied War medals.

After the war her thirst for travel and adventure was unabated. She went to India for five years as private secretary to the Marchioness of Reading, who was wife of the Viceroy of India. Yvonne FitzRoy travelled extensively in India, publishing her Courts and Camps in India (1926), a work that is still quoted in current academic

literature. Items of her correspondance, diaries and photographs from 1921-39 are retained in the British Library, Oriental and India Office collections. In 1929 she went on to publish a work on Canada Impressions and Comments of Canada in the Early 20th Century.

Yvonne FitzRoy lived at West Green House and died unmarried at Hartley Wintney on 20 Mar 1971.
