Yateley Church and Churchyard Monumental Inscriptions Plots A to D

This churchyard is supposedly closed, but memorials are still being added. This survey was up to date at 1997 incorporating earlier surveys where gravestones had been lost. A few gravestones lost in a rubbish heap were recovered and their details added in 2001.

Warning: This version of the records is not wholly satisfactory, as it was created automatically, and some of the font styles like superscript and subscript have been lost, and some data has got confused and interpreted as codes used by pbwiki for font styles. We have a better version available.

Please let us know through this email link if you use this material and share with us your Yateley relevant research for our Local History Collection. We will be thankful, and it is also in your interest, as we have a lot of other material and possibly have made contact with other family or local history researchers who can help you.

[As noted by mid-1990s Yateley Society May Fayre display, before the grave boards were replaced at Easter 1996:

The Simmonds Graves are a very interesting feature of the churchyard of St. Peters, Yateley. The graves are marked by a rare, possibly unique headboard. This headboard is made entirely of wood, consisting of a series of boards in a framework mounted on short legs with pyramidal finials. The outstanding aspect is that no less than six family members are recorded, each with his or her individual board.

The whole construction is painted white and has, or rather had, the descriptions of the interred lettered in black.

It is not surprising, given our climate, that the headboard tends to deteriorate after a few years. The original was put up in Victorian times and has had to be renewed or refurbished several times since. The last complete renovation was in the 1950s and the sketch (figure 32) is taken from a photograph of that vintage.

By the late 1970s the headboard was in a bad state, rotten, and with most finials missing. Jean McIlwaine, the church archivist, set about organising another renovation and succeeded in obtaining the necessary raw materials. The woodwork was replaced with oak and painted white.

At this time the church was destroyed in the infamous arson attack, all energies were concentrated on theb church and the headboards were allowed to remain unfinished, without the lettering.

Today the woodwork has again reached a sad state (whoever advised Jean to accept oak made a mistake, oak does not take paint well and things are rotting merrily).

THE YATELEY SOCIETY is concerned about this as the headboards are very unusual. Reconstruction, using a better wood such as elm should improve matters, and this is being considered. Inevitably there is the problem of cost; so far all the Society knows is that an informal estimate for the raw materials alone comes to a horrifying figure. We will not let the matter rest, Yateley deserves its special features.

Notes:

1. The graves were once known as the "Angel Graves" because of the Miss and Mrs Angel Simmonds recorded on the headboards.

2. The 19th century Simmonds are recorded as "...late of the Parish of PADDINGTON...", while the later Simmonds have no such attribution - so who moved in which direction and when?

3. The headboards can be found halfway up the path leading from the church front door to Pipsons Lane.

Tony Hocking Yateley Society

Note by R H Johnston (28.4.1997): These graves were formerly maintained by a charitable trust, which probably ensured there survival when similar wooden headboards were lost. Changes in Charity regulations later resulted in the finance being diverted to the general Yateley Charities.]

1997: under inscription on the old board found loose, the first line has no "of". Last line "debarted" - is definitely "b" not "p", strong upstroke, no down stroke.

1997: Daughter Julia Vincent visited the site during the 1997 survey and said that her parent's memorial and grave was always at present location and in the form of a metal plate on stone (though the original stone broke and had to be replaced. She also says their family was astonished when the monument A59A appeared on the very same site for an unrelated family without their permission and having removed their planting. It would seem there was a confusion about the sites, as the burials were made at about the same time. Mr Dickenson had negotiated for the family to use this site which had been reserved, but the person for whom it had been reserved had been buried elsewhere.

B2 RHJ1997 (16.5.1997)c Near North Porch of church _UNKNOWN slab 54"l x 27"w, top 5" from ground. curved down edges (cf A18) 1997: In general good, but virtually no inscription left. lichin. portland or limestone centred? Roman letters, including lower case 1997: Not recorded before 1997

1997: all very difficult & uncertain (see paper version)

1997: Line 1: essentially blank, but a few possible indeterminate letter marks

1997: Line 2: Full width line. May start "Memory", however there is a l type mark at the location of the r. Line may posssibly finish with N

1997: Line 3: Starts strangely, almost suggesting another very narrow line between Lines 2 & 3. However the general style of writing on the stone suggest this is unlikely amd that the marks for line 2A are either fortuitous or are raised letters from Line 3. This line appears to start Ofm.

1997: Line 4: Definite "D" at start of line then follow quite deep marks with another raised letter. Best guess is Daur

1997: Line 5: Definite "K" at start of line, marks that follow constitent with "Kath". Possibly N at the end of the line.

1997: Line 6: Definite "T" at start of line. some vertical marks follow, perhaps suggesting 3 letter word, but cannot be made sense of.
