Yateley Church and Churchyard Monumental Inscriptions - Internal memorials

This churchyard is supposedly closed, but memorials are still being added. This survey was up to date at 1997 incorporating earlier surveys where gravestones had been lost. A few gravestones lost in a rubbish heap were recovered and their details added in 2001.

Warning: This version of the records is not wholly satisfactory, as it was created automatically, and some of the font styles like superscript and subscript have been lost, and some data has got confused and interpreted as codes used by pbwiki for font styles. We have a better version available.

Please let us know through this email link if you use this material and share with us your Yateley relevant research for our Local History Collection. We will be thankful, and it is also in your interest, as we have a lot of other material and possibly have made contact with other family or local history researchers who can help you.

Previous survey: This monument consists of a flat marble stone with inscription, on the floor of the north side of chancel, with above it (before 1878) a large Pillar of Black and White Marble surmounted by an urn, without inscription (see Int.145). (This mural monument was recessed into the north wall of the chancel prior to 1878, when it was resited at the west end of the south wall of the South Aisle. The mural monument was destroyed in the fire of 1979.) Following the fire, the stone slab was found under the choir stalls (that were erected in 1878) but it is thought that this was not the original position as the soil beneath was undisturbed. Coffins without markers were found near the Sanctuary steps, and it is thought that this was the burial site. It is suggested that the slab was moved against the wall to allow a pleasing pattern to be made using the Victorian and the then newly discovered medieval tiles which graced the Chancel prior to the fire.

This two-line Latin inscription is the product of a London workshop. It measures 71 x 362mm with thickness varying from 4.0 to 6.3mm. The first word of the second line ('Et') had been engraved on a separate piece of brass 37x41mm inset into the main plate and joined with a lead wipe which I did not disturb.

Three 28mm long rivets with tapered heads were fitted to the original rivet-holes, the nuts and washers being locked with resin. The reverse of the plate was given a coat of bitumaastic paint. The brass was rebated into an Iroko board measuring 6.75"x18.25"x1.25". Holes were drilled through the board for the three new rivets and the Brass secured to the board by fitting an extra nut and washer to each stud at the back of the board. These were tightened and locked with resin. Holes were drilled at each corner of the board (for mopunting it in the church) and the board was given three coats of polyurethane varnish.

1997: no date on brass. - date ca 1450 ascribed to this brass is presumably on the basis of the straight black letters used in C15.

F.G.S., Monumental Brass Repairs and Conservation, The Radleth, Plealey, Pontesbury, Shrewsbury SY5 0XF: (Mills Stevenson 1926, MSII). This Brass, a product of a London workshop (style 'F'), comprises the effigy of Agnes Lawerd, a four-line English inscription and a group of nine sons and one daughter (on one plate). The effigy of William Lawerd was lost at about the time of the fire. The female effigy measures 467x156mm with thickness 3.7 to 5.0mm. The inscription plate measures 162x517mm with thickness 2.5 to 5.9mm. The group of children measures 152x268mm with thickness 4.0 to 4.6mm.

The female effigy and the inscription plate were each fitted with three new tapered-head rivets. The group of children had been secured by two iron rivets with large heads. The corrosion around the rivet holes was removed and two new rivets with large (10mm) tapered heads were fitted. A small backing-plate was fitted at the rear of the inscription to cover a hole. Relaid 2.10.1982: the old pitch, lead plugs and cement were chisselled out, and drilled to a depth of at least 50mm and undercut. When a satisfactory "dry-fit" had been achieved, the reverses of the plates were coated with 'Rito' bitumen, the holes were filled with a resin/sand grout and the brasses relaid. The surface of the slab of MSII is not in good condition and had already been made up with cement which had cracked and flaked. We filled this with a resin mix.

Upper dexter (left) shield missing. Upper sinster (right) shield, was clearly once enameled now gone. brass, on purbeck marble slab. Upper part of a woman with ruff and head-dress & hands in prayer.

2 prayer fillets and 1 shield, inscription plate. Upper dexter (left) shield removed and a resin reproduction of its palimpsest back (showing part of a robe) placed on a wooden plate on the wall above: the cement in the shield carries the impression of of this palimpsest: this shield is now Sinister (right) - see Notes.

Arms: Shield at right (sinister): Smythe (Ermine 3 roundels?) impaling Morflett. (This is badly defaced, having lost its enamel. What can be made out is: three roundels or impaling some vertical animal (probably argent)).

black-letter gothic letters YBB/NOT_ Elizabeth MORFLETT not in burial register (too early) Notes (18.10.1982) by William Lack B.Sc., M.I.Geol, M.I.M.M. F.G.S., Monumental Brass Repairs and Conservation, The Radleth, Plealey, Pontesbury, Shrewsbury SY5 0XF: (Mills Stevenson 1926, MSIV). This London-engraved Brass (style 'G') comprises the upper half of the effigy of Elizabeth Morflett, a three-line Latin inscription, two scolls and one shield. This shield, Smythe impaling Morflett, had been incorrectly laid on the dexter side above the Ormesby scroll, the second shield being lost. The dimensions, range of thickness and number of original rivets in each plate are as follows:

Female effigy187x141mm1.5 to 2.0mm3 rivets

Inscription81x457mm1.7 to 3.0mm4 rivets

Shield 151x127mm3.5 to 4.3mm2 rivets

Symthe scroll66x202mm1.6 to 2.3mm2 rivets

Ormesby scroll61x173mm1.8 to 2.5mm2 rivets

When Mr Thomas took the Brass up, he discovered that the shield was palimpsest. The reverse side shows the lower part of a civilian in furred gown c. 1500. A resin facsimile was produced from this reverse. Subsequently when cleaning the Brass, I foundtraces of engraving on the back of the female effigy and on two parts of the inscription. This engraving had been mostly effaced but appeared to be part of a Flemish border.

The rivet-holes on this Brass were tapped OBA and fitted with 40mm long threaded studs. Nuts and washers were fitted and the stud-heads rivetted over. A small fracture on the female effigy was repaired with a backing-plate. One additional rivet hole (part of the original palimpsest work) was blanked and concealed. When taken up, the inscription was in three pieces, the original lead wipes at the joins having failed. These pieces were rejoined with brass backing-plates. In addition to the four original rivet-holes, which were re-used, there were two other holes (again arising from the earlier palimpsest work); I fitted a new stud to one of these and blanked the other. Two new studs were fitted to the shield; one nut and washer was locked with resin as proximity to original lead infill inhibited any soldering. I made a resin replica from the palimpsest reverse of this shield and rebated it into an Iroko board 10"x9"x1.25". Two brass rivets were fitted to the replica and it was fastened to the board in the same way as MSI [Int.3]. Two studs were fitted to each of the scrolls; backing-plates were fitted to rejoin a separate piece on the Smythe scroll and to repair a fracture on the Ormesby scroll.

Civilian ca. 1590. Kneeling bearded man in a long fur gown and ruff collar, hands in the prayer position. Inscription lost. F.G.S., Monumental Brass Repairs and Conservation, The Radleth, Plealey, Pontesbury, Shrewsbury SY5 0XF: (Mills Stevenson 1926, MSV). This London-engraved effigy, in the 'Johnson' style, measures 477 x 176mm with thickness varying from 1.3 to 1.9mm. The inscription is lost although the indent remains. The effigy was badly buckled and cracked before repair. I flattened it, repaired the fractures with brass backing-plates and fitted eight new rivets with tapered heads. The slab is of a hard black marble which proved exceedingly laborious to drill.

S. Loader (Parish Magazine Dec 1969): THE MILES MEMORIALS IN THE CHURCH The three memorials to the Miles family of Frogmore Park may be seen on the north wall of the nave between the door and the pulpit. They are the work of William Osmond of Salisbury, (1791-1875). The late Mr Rupert Gunnis, author of a standard reference book, "A Dictionary of English Sculptors", visited our church about four years ago to see these monuments, and we talked about them. Osmond's earlier works were in the Greek style as we can see in his monument in white marble, to Dame Betty Miles, 1834, which has a beautifully scultored weeping figure with extinguished torch and a draped urn on a pedistal, with inscription in Roman lettering. Osmond was a great friend of Augustus Welby Pugin, the famous Gothic revival architect, who persuaded him to abandon his "Pagan Blisters". We see the result in the next monument to Elizabeth Bassnett, 1844, an essay in gothic, with Old English lettering, in stone. The latest monument is nearest to the pulpit, to Ann Miles, 1850, and Jonathan Miles, 1866. This shows another development of Osmond's "Christian" style, in which marble on a grey backing, and he has reverted to Roman lettering. The persons commemorated are buried near the chancel screen by the lectern. A number of Osmond's works may be seen in Salisbury Cathedral.

Brass to George MASON in whose memory the King's Colours were hung in St Peter's.

The Colours were returned to The Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment 1927

Photographs of the presentation in 1927 were in a bad way following the fire: the album was destroyed but the photographs were copied by Michael Lea: these are in the Church Archives and a set was sent by Jean McIlwaine to the Regimental Museum, they were delighted and did not knwo of their existence. Dear Sir

Miss Mason has very kindly given her consent, subject to the approval of yourself & the Churchwardens, to the removal of the King's Colour now in Yately church to the King's Own Memorial Chapel at Lancaster. I felt, when writing to Miss Mason in this matter & not less now when in Aldershot, Arrangements **** to be made for a suitable ceremony at Yateley Church & also, should you consent, I know the Regiment will wish to put a brass in the Church recording the facts.

If any further information is required I need not say I would be only too pleased to give it should it be in my power to do so.

My address will be BOWERHAM Barracks Lancaster after the middle of next week.

Yours v. truly
