Dictionary of Yateley Biography

Entries will be arranged in strict alphabetic order of surnames. To find out if a biography of a person has been written, or is in preparation, click on the initial letter in the boxes below:

ABCDEFGHIJKLM
NOPQRSTUVWXYZ

The Yateley Society has already prepared some biographies of Yateley people in the course of preparing the annual exhibitions. Links to these are being created.

There are a considerable number of articles on Yateley people on the new on-line Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. The DNB log-in page enables those with passwords, or a Library log-in card, to access these biographes. Your Hampshire County Council card for Yateley Library will work. The address of the Oxford DNB log-in page is:

There is an even greater number of Yateley people who have appeared in the pages of Who's Who.

Similar links will be provided in due course.

There are already a number of biographies of potters, commoners and others on our associated website the Berkshire Hampshire Surrey Heathland History Forum. Links will also be created. To facilitate ''copy and paste' the website address is

For many years the Society has provided a service to family historians with Yateley ancestors by searching the Yateley History Project database which can be accessed by the Society's researchers from the Society's website. This database is password-protected for copyright and privacy reasons as explained on its front page. The Society has provided information to family historians on a reciprocity basis, and as a result has collected many family trees and photographs. Once these biographies are available on a public website there will be less incentive for family historians to contact us, but we would still very much welcome continuing an interchange of information, through the links on YHP pages. We should like to encourage family historians to email to us biographies of their ancestors - whether gentry or farm labourers. Initially, for privacy reasons we shall only accept biographies of people associated with Yateley who died before 1958.
